Mason’s Kratzer finishes in third on uneven bars

Jarrod Ulrey reports:

Crystal Kratzer made the best of a difficult situation the last two months.

During a meet in January, the Mason sophomore broke the big toe on her left foot while competing on the beam, sidelining her for more than a month. When she returned, Kratzer was only able to compete on bars.

That didn’t derail an eventual spot for her on the state podium, however, as she scored 9.225 in her only state event Saturday at Hilliard Bradley to finish third behind Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ Alecia Farina (9.400) and Jessica Matia (9.325).

“I’m pretty proud of it, especially since I had to compete with a broken toe,” Kratzer said. “The bars were the only event I was able to compete in unfortunately. I’m also pretty proud of our team.”

Kratzer was one of four Mason individuals at state. Sophomore Gabrielle Sora finished 12th in the all-around with a 35.850, recording a 9.250 on beam and a 9.050 on vault.

Also competing all-around for the Comets was junior Audrey Harpen (32.250), while junior Brooke Middleton was 12th on vault (9.175) and also competed on beam (8.225).

Sora and Harpen were the area’s only individual competitors in the all-around, which was won by Farina (38.350).

“It’s really exciting,” Sora said. “This is my first year doing high school gymnastics and making it here is really exciting.”

Farina also won beam (9.450) and vault (9.900) and teammate Michaela Romito was first on floor (9.700).

Turpin junior Rebecca Swertfeger just missed the podium on bars, recording an 8.850 to place seventh.

Swertfeger advanced to state despite having surgery in October for a torn ligament.

“It was really hard to come back, but I did a ton of base work,” Swertfeger said.
